Zoom on the Stihl BGA 57

The Stihl BGA 57 in use

The Stihl BGA 57

With its cordless handheld design, the Stihl BGA 57 is mostly aimed at homeowners with an average-sized yard that requires regular upkeep, generally around a quarter to half an acre.

It is rated for a maximum air volume of 365 cubic feet per minute (CFM) and a maximum air speed of 123 miles per hour (MPH). To put it simply, it combines strong airflow to move piles of leaves in the yard with enough force to clear heavier material such as pine needles or acorns from patios and walkways.

This model comes with a 36V brushless motor, designed for cordless use and easy maneuvering. This is a bare tool configuration, which means it is supplied without batteries. Its operation needs a 36V AK battery. According to Stihl, using the AK 20 battery should allow the blower to run for up to 22 minutes on a full charge.

The BGA 57 by Stihl has just one speed setting, meaning it's just either ON or OFF.

This cordless handheld blower weighs 5.1 lbs and can be steered with one hand for focused leaf and debris removal. When using an AK 20 battery, the total weight of the blower reaches around 7.8 lbs.

The Stihl BGA 57's performance versus other blowers

The following charts are provided to give you an idea how the key specs of the Stihl BGA 57 compare with handheld leaf blowers of similar voltage (between 36 and 48V).

Important: All figures are based on published specifications. Because manufacturers may test at different power levels or under different conditions, use the autonomy/runtime efficiency figures as a guideline only. Runtime and efficiency values are based on the use with the AK 20 battery.
  • The Stihl BGA 57 tips the scales at just 5.1 lbs, placing it among the more lightweight cordless handheld blowers in the 36 to 48V range. Should weight be a deciding factor, the Black+Decker LSW40C is worth a look at just 2.4 lbs the bare tool.
  • The air speed of the Stihl BGA 57 maxes out at 123 MPH. While more than adequate for many jobs, its air speed is below average among other battery-operated handheld blowers between 36 and 48V. For the fastest air speed in this category, you may want to consider the Husqvarna 350iB, which can expell air at a velocity that can reach 200 MPH.
  • With a maximum airflow of 365 CFM (cubic feet per minute), this model is on the lower end in terms of air circulation for cordless handheld blowers with a comparable voltage. For the highest air volume, you may want to have a look at the Ryobi RY40HPLB01K, which boasts with 800 CFM.
  • Its battery provides a maximum autonomy of 22 minutes, placing the BGA 57 on the lower end in terms of runtime among its cordless counterparts. To enjoy the best possible autonomy in this category, you could have a look at the Stihl BGA 200 which offers up to 535 minutes of runtime.
  • Because larger batteries naturally increase runtime, it can be helpful to consider runtime efficiency, a measure of how effectively a blower uses the energy available. The Stihl BGA 57 shows relatively low runtime efficiency, providing fewer minutes of operation for each unit of battery power. If you are focused on getting more use per charge, the Stihl BGA 50 offers the highest runtime efficiency, at 0.8 minutes per Wh.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 36-48V cordless blowers, the Stihl BGA 57 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this blower nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

The bottom line
