Zoom on the Worx WG588

The Worx WG588 in use

The Worx WG588

With its cordless handheld design, the Worx WG588 is appropriate for homeowners with a typical home yard ranging from about a quarter to half an acre.

It is capable of expelling a maximum air volume of 600 cubic feet per minute (CFM). Its air speed is rated at 100 MPH. In practice, it can shift small amounts of leaves and light debris on yard sections, patios, or walkways.

With a 40V brushless motor, the WG588 functions as a cordless blower, offering freedom of movement. Worx claims that it can deliver power of a 26-cc gas blower. It comes with two 20V 4.0Ah batteries, and all batteries are required for operation. When fully charged, they should provide up to 49 minutes of runtime.

With 3 speed settings, this blower’s output can be set to meet the needs of jobs big or small.

Weighing 8.6 lbs as a bare tool and 12.3 lbs with the two batteries, the handheld design allows the operator to control airflow with one hand.

Beyond blowing, the WG588 can switch to vacuum mode, making leaf cleanup easier by depositing leaves into a convenient bag (12 gallon bag included). In addition to vacuuming, the manufacturer specifies a mulching ratio of 20:1, reducing 20 input bags to just one output bag during collection. The unit uses a metal impeller.

The Worx WG588's performance versus other blowers

The following charts are provided to give you an idea how the key specs of the Worx WG588 compare with handheld leaf blowers of similar voltage (between 36 and 48V).

Important: All figures are based on published specifications. Because manufacturers may test at different power levels or under different conditions, use the autonomy/runtime efficiency figures as a guideline only.
  • When compared to other cordless handheld blowers in the 36 to 48V range, the Worx WG588 stands out for its higher bare tool weight of 8.6 lbs. To enjoy the lowest possible weight in this category, you could have a look at the Black+Decker LSW40C which is only 2.4 lbs the bare tool.
  • Upon exiting the nozzle, the air can reach speeds of up to 100 MPH, which is on the lower end for battery-operated handheld blowers between 36 and 48V. For the fastest air speed in this category, you may want to consider the Makita GBU03ZV, which can expell air at a velocity that can reach 487 MPH.
  • Worx WG588 boasts an impressive airflow, reaching 600 CFM (Cubic Foot per Minute), positioning it amongst the most powerful cordless handheld blowers with a comparable voltage. If air volume is important to you, the Ryobi RY40HPLB01K, with 800 CFM, could be in your good books.
  • Users can expect a maximum autonomy of 49 minutes from its battery, which means the WG588 won't run as long as many other cordless handheld units before needing to be plugged in. To enjoy the best possible autonomy in this category, you could have a look at the Stihl BGA 200 which offers up to 535 minutes of runtime.
  • Because larger batteries naturally increase runtime, it can be helpful to consider runtime efficiency, a measure of how effectively a blower uses the energy available. With its current setup, the Worx WG588 offers a lower level of runtime efficiency compared to the other compared battery-powered handheld models. If you are focused on getting more use per charge, the Stihl BGA 50 offers the highest runtime efficiency, at 0.8 minutes per Wh.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 36-48V cordless blowers, the Worx WG588 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this blower nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
